Low-income teens design apps that reflect their neighborhoods

While parts of the Bay Area enjoy the benefits of the tech boom, little has changed in Maira Lopez’s world. The 17-year-old’s mom still insists on driving her everywhere in their East Oakland neighborhood. When Lopez recently visited her friend Esmeralda Argueta, her mother was upset that the teens had walked two blocks to the corner store to buy chips.
