The Level Playing Field Institute (LPFI) is hosting a hackathon in the Bay Area! Named “Level the Coding Field”, the purpose of this hackathon is to expose minority groups to computer science and to promote production rather than just consumption of technology within these groups.

What is a hackathon?

If you’ve ever wanted to build an app or game for your phone, that’s what “hackathons” are for. A hackathon is a gathering of people who get together over a weekend to utilize technology to create solutions for problems they see in the world.

When will the hackathon take place?

The hackathon will be on Saturday, 8:30am – 5pm and Sunday, 8:30am – 3pm. Students must commit for the whole weekend.

Who will be there and what can I expect?

• Students from under-represented minority groups in computer science, entering 8th, 9th, and 10th grade in Fall 2015
• A hacking team! You will be placed on a team based on age, technology interest and skill level
• Learning how to produce your very own mobile apps over the weekend

What will the event be like?

Level The Coding Field is designed to create safe space while expanding what you think you’re capable of. Students will work in teams and will be assigned mentors.

On Saturday, you will learn some mobile application development basics, generate solutions to solve real problems in your communities, and start designing a mobile app.

On Sunday, you will continue building the app while finalizing a presentation for judging.

Do I need to be a whiz at coding and computers?

No, not at all! You just need to have an interest in technology and computers and be willing to learn to build games and web apps.

What should I bring with me?

You bring your brain, enthusiasum and a willingness to hack! We provide you with food, laptops, power and guidance.

Are there prizes?

Prizes are awarded to winning teams, incuding $500 grand prizes!

Complete the questions on the Eventbrite page and submit your application.  Students and parents will be notified with next steps once their application has been accepted.

I’m an adult and interested in volunteering – how?

Parents and other adults (technical and non-technical) are welcome to come and help volunteer. Please sign up via Eventbrite. For mentor volunteers, there is a mandatory training on Wednesday, August 19th or Thursday, August 20th from 6-8pm.
